Project GLAD - Training Model
Administrator Awareness
This is a three-hour training for administrators to introduce GLAD theory, research and
strategies. Administrators will be provided with a GLAD checklist to help monitor implementation.
2-day Training: Theory, Research, and Introduction to the Strategies
Training in theory and research with practical classroom implications and applications occurs over a two-day
period. It covers the works of educators across the disciplines: readings, writing, brain-compatible
teaching, language acquisition, cross cultural respect, primary language, and coaching. Research is directly
tied to specific classroom implications, strategies and organization.
4-day Training: GLAD in Action
Participants will observe a demonstration session in a classroom all morning for four days. One of the GLAD
trainers works with the children, presenting the strategies. The other trainer coaches the teachers who are
observing in the back of the room. This trainer is explaining what is being done, why, and generally answering
questions concerning the lessons. Afternoons are spent at the IMC with time for feedback and
collaboration, including initial planning with the trainers for the trainees' upcoming units.
GLAD Coaches
Schools receiving GLAD training will select two teachers to serve as GLAD coaches at their site. GLAD coaches
will attend monthly afternoon meetings at the Staff Development Center. Coaches will implement GLAD strategies
and model effective GLAD practices. They will be responsible for supporting teachers with GLAD implementation at
their school sites and may begin the two-year process of becoming GLAD key trainers.
On Site Follow-up
A GLAD trainer will visit schools to offer support for GLAD coaches and assess school needs to help maximize
implementation. The trainer can offer the school support by facilitating grade level collaboration, and assisting
in the development of grade level year plans, GLAD units, and unit demonstration kits. The GLAD trainer will
support teachers with their personal implementation plans, guiding them in reflection and inquiry of their individual
practices.
1-day Unit Training: (Prerequisite: 2-day and 4-day GLAD training)
Participants will be introduced to a grade level specific, standards based unit, developed by Santa Ana key
trainers. In the morning, participants will be walked through the standards, strategies, and assessments for the
unit. In the afternoon, participants will have time to prepare their own set of materials to facilitate immediate
implementation.
GLAD Forum
This is an optional monthly after school meeting for all GLAD trained teachers. Teachers will have the
opportunity to discuss GLAD strategies, and meet in grade levels to share resources and develop units.
GLAD Coaching Meetings
These are monthly meetings for site-selected GLAD coaches and trainers. Meetings will provide coaches with the
opportunity to develop their professional coaching skills through reflection and shared experiences. Monthly
meetings will facilitate communication and dissemination of new information.
GLAD Website
A Santa Ana GLAD website has been developed for access to the GLAD training calendar, downloadable units, strategy
information, links, and other resources.
