Welcome to the School Nurse Expansion Initiative...
School Nurse Expansion Initiative Creation:
The Children and Families Commission of Orange County launched the School Readiness Nurse Expansion Project in 2004. The commission funded all Orange County school districts to hire school nurses to provide health services to children ages 0-5.
Their vision is to ensure that all children enter Kindergarten healthy and ready to learn. The first goal of the School Readiness Expansion Initiative is to promote lifelong health for young children and their families. Another goal is to prevent, decrease, identify and treat health problems and illnesses in young children.
The nurses have a current California RN license, a Bachelor’s Degree and pediatric experience/background.
Here are some of the services provided by the School Nurse Expansion Initiative:
- Physical and dental health screenings
- Developmental screenings for preschool-age children
- Vision, hearing, height and weight screenings
- Nutrition education and physical activity opportunities through parent and preschool children classes
- Outreach and promotion efforts in the community, such as presentations at school health fairs, PTA meetings and private preschools
- Referral of children with identified health problems and follow-up to assure treatment.
