On June 30, 2006 Dr. Mijares, superintendent of the Santa Ana Unified School District for the past twelve years, announced his resignation effective August 15, 2006 to assume the role as Vice President for the Western Region for The College Board. In his new capacity, Dr. Mijares will be developing and advocating programs to increase student success in college.
In his letter to staff, Dr. Mijares offered the following, "Please know it has been my profound joy to serve you, our students, and community. You have my deepest admiration, respect, and praise for your professionalism and inspiration in the lives of our students. I have never seen harder working or caring employees than in the Santa Ana Unified School District. We must continue to have high expectations for our students and never compromise our belief that they are the best."
In order to find a qualified candidate, the Board of Education selected The International Group to head the selection process for the new Superintendent.
